Imagine that you are a guest
attending an elegant dinner party. You are seated at a beautifully
appointed table. You are confronted with 10 utensils at your plate; 5
forks, 2 spoons and 3 knives. Do you comfortably enjoy conversations
with your table-mates, or do you break out in a cold sweat because you
have no idea what to do with all of these utensils? Our NCL girls would
be able to tell you exactly what to do.
The February Ticktocker
meetings hosted Ms. Shirin Teyssier of Gracious Odyssey, teaching social
etiquette skills. She opened the meeting by asking the girls what they
would like to learn about appropriate behaviors at social events.
While many of the girls were interested in learning about conversation
(a possible subject for future meetings), the focus of this meeting was
table manners. With boundless patience, Ms. Teyssier instructed our
girls in table etiquette.
In groups of 5 or 6, the girls learned the
placement of utensils, and the function of each piece. They heard about
how to hold a cup or glass and how the various plates were used. With
this information, they each had the opportunity to set their own place
at the table. When the food was served on large platters, they learned
how to use appropriate serving utensils to take food from the platter
and place it on their plates.
As they enjoyed their
dinners, Ms. Teyssier instructed them in the continental style of
holding their forks and knives and talked with them about posture.
Therefore, should they ever find themselves entering an elegant
dinner party with a beautifully appointed table, they will be able to
enjoy the conversation and not have to break out in a cold sweat of
embarrassment and anxiety. Thank you very much Ms. Teyssier.

Social graces have become a lost art. As parents of two children ages 6 and 9, in an increasingly complex society, my husband and I were so pleased to learn, subsequently enroll, our children in Gracious Odyssey, social etiquette instructions for children with Shirin Teyssier. Not only was Ms. Teyssier kind, gentle and patient in her manner of instructions, but she took a real interest in each individual child. I really believe that both my girls are more confident in a dining situation and they are proud of their abilities. Our family enthusiastically recommends Gracious Odyssey to parents of boys and girls alike for a fun and practical course of instruction.

I was very impressed and relieved to find someone like Shirin Teyssier to train my staff to interact in a refined and professional manner with my high level clienteles and dignitaries both in person and on the telephone. Neuchâtel Chocolates at The Plaza Hotel, Park Avenue Plaza, and 60 Wall Street are some of the most prestigious spots in NYC. Her training in the upkeep of professional image and the dress code made a valuable contribution to the overall elegance of the company. With many of the employees being young, not sophisticated, nor worldly, Shirin was able to get through to them in a creative and fun way.
